Biodynamic Agriculture
Definition

In 1924, Rudolf Steiner, founder of the anthroposophy, posed the bases of biodynamic agriculture, in the form of eight conferences pronounced with the Koberwitz Field, close of Breslau in Silesia.

Rudolf Steiner gave this course of agriculture on the request of several anxious farmers to observe the growth of the seeds degeneration and the fall of the quality of produced food : " That should be made to stop the fall of the quality of the seeds and the food ? "

In answer to a question about the vegetable diseases, Rudolf Steiner explained why actually it was not initially the plant which was sick but the environment and particularly the ground, which could fall sick. It was thus necessary to seek the causes of the alleged diseases of the plants in the state of the ground and the environment.

This " Course with the farmers ", as it is usually named, was printed dice 1925, first of all for a intern circle then for all.

Quotations of Rudolf Steiner :

" Biodynamic agriculture is an agriculture ensuring the health of the ground and the plants to get a healthy food with the animals and the Men. It is based on a deep comprehension of the laws " alive " acquired by a vision qualitative/globale of nature. It considers that nature is degraded currently so much that it is not able any more to cure itself and that it is necessary to give again on the ground its essential fertile vitality with the health of the plants, the animals and the Men thanks to "therapeutic processes. "

" Only a judgement on agriculture that can put forth which draws this judgement from the field, the forest, the animals that it raises ".

" the ideal of agriculture biodynamics is the agricultural organization with the greatest autonomy of production adapted to the local conditions and the local possibilities of work. "

Immediately after the conferences of Rudolf Steiner, an experimental circle of 148 members and 66 experimental pieces were formed :
    ● 48 are in Germany,
    ● 7 in Switzerland,
    ● 5 in Holland,
    ● 2 in Poland,
    ● 2 in America,
    ● 1 in Finland
    ● and 1 in New Zealand.

This circle is also divided into several sections :
    ● agriculture,
    ● truck farming,
    ● vine growing,
    ● forestry economics,
    ● bee-keeping
    ● and the veterinary medicine.

Moreover, six institutes take part in work of the experimental circle of which :
    ● 2 in Germany,
    ● 2 in Switzerland,
    ● 1 in Holland
    ● and 1 in America.

In 1927, the producers' cooperative Demeter is created on proposal of the former German chancellor Michaelis.

The original name of the method, " biological fertilization ", became in 1930, " biodynamic agriculture ", and the organization was called " experimental circle for biodynamic agriculture "

Goals of biodynamic agriculture :
    ● Soigner ground
    ● Régénérer, to work and maintain the landscapes
    ● Fto ournir with the Men a healthy food
    ● Développer approach of living and to include/understand the role of the Man
    ● Oto uvrir new social prospects on the farms as in the producing, consuming bonds (by including the tradesmen there)

Specific practices of biodynamic agriculture :
    ● Design of the farm like an agricultural organization
    ● Manufacture, the use and the dynamization of " biodynamics preparations "
    ● The taking into account of the influences of the cosmic periphery (the moon, sun, planets...)

Firm biodynamics and many biological companies " appeared during years " has the merit to have preserved the traditional processes, to have developed new ones and to have carried them at the current technical level.

It should be also known that biodynamic agriculture and organic agriculture, although of different design, work towards the same ends and collaborate readily together in joint projects.
