History of agriculture biodynamics in the world

1924 : Run given by Rudolf Steiner to Koberwitz (current Poland) on the request of anxious farmers of the degeneration of the seeds and the quality of food. Rudolf Steiner had warned on the use of the animal flours at the time of other conferences (cf text joint).
Creation of a circle of research to carry out of par the practical application and scientific research (by E Pfeiffer, L Kolisko and other researchers).

From 1924 to 1930-35: rapid development of agriculture biodynamics on great fields in Germany, then in Switzerland. The term " Biodynamics " (Agriculture) was created starting from " Biological-Dynamics ".

1927 : creation of the producers' cooperative DEMETER on proposal of the former German chancellor Michaelis. Deposit of the mark in 1932.
In the years 1920-1930, Lili Kolisko made research on the influences of planets, in particular of the moon on the plants.

1948: after the Second World War, agriculture biodynamics takes again rise on family farms this time, initially in the Germanic countries (one counts a thousand of farms, of which many fields from 200 to 1500 ha) but also in the USA with the arrival of E. Pfeiffer, in the Netherlands, etc, then in many other countries.

In the Fifties, Ehrenfried Pfeiffer (1899-1961), which had emigrated in the United States, founded an institute of research and developed a process composting of urban waste and industrial waste various very innovative. For the study of the forces of Life, several researchers, in particular PFEIFFER, developed various morphogenetic methods : significant crystallizations, significant morpho-cromatographies, drops, etc.

From 1960, Maria Thun being based on this work on the influences of planets, continued research by developing the calendar of sowings, whose publication is annual.

Years 1970-80 : the development of agriculture biodynamics accelerates especially in the Germanic and Scandinavian countries, like in Australia and New Zealand, with the increasing awakening of the ecological problems.

For a long time, the farmers bio-dynamists sought to select cereals adapted to biological agriculture and biodynamics. In the years 1930, the farmer Martin Schmidt selected a rye of high size for agriculture biodynamics still cultivated today. These 20 last years, this research was accentuated with the creation of new varieties registered with the official catalogue in Germany and Switzerland. Recently Peter Kunz with registered voter the Sativa variety.

Tests DOC. : Program of Swiss research in collaboration with the state allowing the comparison of the three agricultural systems D (biodynamics), O (bio-organics) and C (conventional). In 2002, publication of the comparative results 21 years of research, and publication in the review Science. Documents attached.

Today, agriculture biodynamics is practised in nearly 60 countries, of is in west on all the continents and under all the latitudes. It represents : nearly 2.500 agricultural fields certified in Europe (EC) and 550 other companies (wholesalers, transformers), and more than one million hectares throughout the world. Association DEMETER International gathers more than 20 administrative countries of the mark. Permanence of a delegate DEMETER to the Council of Europe in Brussels.
